I knew that I wanted a wedding website. Not because it’s a necessary item, but just out of sheer principle. I live the majority of my life on the internet (I can’t believe I just said that). It’s true though. Every time I need something, the first place I check is the web. So, it just seemed natural that we would have a website for our wedding. The tougher part came when we actually sat down to design our site. Initially, I thought I would use Adobe Dreamweaver. It’s what I have used to create my Knot Bio, and it’s pretty user friendly. My life changed the day I read Miss Cupcake’s “Creating a Wedding Website with iWeb.” If you have an Apple and you think to yourself, “I can’t create a website by myself, what are these girls thinking?” Please, take a breath, read her article and then give it a go. I promise you will not be disappointed.
iWeb is one of the most user-friendly programs in the world. I’m totally serious. Don’t even think about how you want your website to look, just start playing around. I looked at a bunch of different websites before I made a decision about mine. I started out the same way Miss Cupcake described in the article. iWeb has predesigned templates that you can use to get you started. The first one is the “White” template. I picked that and just started playing around with the colors (through inspector).
Here is our “Welcome” screen. When you pick the template, it will say “Welcome” on the page, and you’ll need to make Inspector your best friend because everything can be changed through this menu. The “Welcome” text looks like it can’t be removed simply by selecting and deleting, but if you go through the Inspector, to the Page tab, you can uncheck display navigation menu to remove the text. From there, just customize to your heart’s desire!
When I first published the site, the font I used (located under Fun Fonts, called Typewriter) is a font specific to Apple, and thus it didn’t show up on a PC. [A side note, I used iWeb to make the site, but we didn't publish to a .Mac account, instead we bought a domain from 1&1 Internet. There are certain features you won't be able to use if you don't publish to a .Mac account, including password protection and the blog/guestbook feature, however Matthew is a computer programmer and was able to create a guest book in PHP.] To get around that, instead of using text boxes, insert a shape and then type inside the shape. When you publish the site, it will make the shape into a picture, thus keeping the font intact. An example of this is shown below:

Here is our “Directions” page. I decided to add a few more hours of work and created a map using Adobe Illustrator. It was quite easy, I just pasted a Google map and traced it accordingly. I also inserted a link to a Google map for good measure.
One of my favorites part of our site is the “Gallery.” iWeb makes this part super easy. You’ll need to add a page from the “White” template called My Albums. Make sure all your photos are in the iPhoto library and then it’s just drag and drop. We put our engagement pictures, pictures from the proposal and then pictures of our family and friends. 90% of our guests have been recognized in our gallery and we’re quite proud of that. For us, it was important to make our family and friends feel very much apart of our wedding.
Our Guestbook is Matthew’s pride and joy. I can only tell you that he wrote it in PHP, and if you’re really interested (and have a computer background), just post a comment and I’ll have Matthew contact you. Our guests have been really responsive to our Guestbook, so I’m really glad we took the extra time to create it.
Hope this helps. Happy website designing!!!

Boy, you sure have done some clever things!
I barely got my website published and have had all kinds of challenges… probably the biggest one is trying to do this at the age of 65!
If you could see it in your heart, and if you have time, is it possible that you two could assist me with improvements to my website? I don’t think it even shows up when someone Googles–at least I couldn’t find it, unless I actually put the web address in the search space!
I don’t even see where I can create a guest page…besides, the more I edit it post publication, the more things go wrong!
Thanks,
Patti

[...] described clearly how to personalize the rather banal iweb templates. these are Miss Cupcake and An Excited Bride – both geniuses in my opinion. Plus enormously generous in taking the time to blog … My new site is only a page with a big illustration and some links to other sites for gallery [...]

Dear Excited Bride,
I can’t thank you enough for your extremely clear and generous posting. I am a mac user and children’s book illustrator and was swamped trying to understand how to make a new website in Dreamweaver, even after taking 3 workshops. I didn’t pursue iweb because I didn’t like the templates either, but now thanks to you I have learned how to design the site to look more the way I want it to. And thank you so much for the link to Miss Cupcake’s tutorial. It’s only because of you two that I finally got a preliminary first page up on my website this morning. My problem was trying to make a site with my own domain name which has been published in most of my books, and how to upload it onto my webserver Superwebhost to replace my extremely out-of-date one. You remarks about being able to do that with iweb was a lifesaver. Also the one about how to take the labels of the pages (e.g. “welcome”) I was getting totally worn out, so many many thanks.
Warmest wishes for a brilliant wedding and loving future,
Cynthia Nugent

Hello, Can you please send me the code for the guestbook? I’m making my very first website and It would really be great if I could add that in. Thank you very much!
June 30, 2008 at 2:22 am
Like a couple others here I was just wondering if you could send me the code for the guestbook page. I am actually putting together a RSVP page and want to use something other than leaving a comment and I think that would work great… Thank you…

Hello excited bride!!
Could please please send me the code for the guestbook?? Iweb is the coolest ever, but booo for no guestbook. So please, help another Iweb fanatic.
Thanks!!!!
July 7, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Hey guys, I know you want the code, and hopefully I can get it to you soon. The fiance is super busy with school right now, so I really can’t bug him now. I promise to ask him very soon!
July 27, 2009 at 10:55 pm
Thank you for sharing all this extremely helpful information. If your guest book code is still available, please send me a copy.
July 17, 2008 at 6:23 pm
When you (and your fiance) gets a chance, would you please send me the code for the guestbook as well? One more question…..when you want to view your webpage, to see what it looks like altogether before you publish it on the web, what do you do? Because I published mine to a folder and when I looked at it, some parts looked off, like the font, some of it was not centered and some of the colors were different. Very strange, but maybe you had similar issues…..let me know when you can.
Thank you!

Nice wedding site!
I too have decided to use iWeb to create my wedding site (after debating of either hand coding, using RapidWeaver, or using iWeb ended up using iWeb because of the idea I had in my head would be easier in iWeb). http://wedding.mandaj.com – I publish with my MobileMe account, but have my paid site’s subdomain forward to my MobileMe address instead
Awesome your hubby made some nifty code so you could have the guestbook functionality for your website too
December 18, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Can I also have the code to the guestbook? Thanks

Hi,
I’ve been tasked by my fiance to build a website. The idea is to keep our carbon foot print as small as possible for this wedding… so I was hoping I could use your guestbook as an RSVP page for our website instead of mailing invitations with response cards. Thanks!
