put your money back in your pocket!

Have you seen the wedding featured on Snippet and Ink? Holy schmoly, talk about classic, vintage and budget-friendly!! Who knew those three words could co-exist?

I’ve said this once and I’ll say it again: DO NOT SPEND THOUSANDS ON CENTERPIECES. Put your money towards your bridal bouquet. That will undoubtedly get the most picture play. As a fan of candles, banquet tables and money:

Another way to save on flowers: TISSUE POMANDERS!!! (Pardon the caps, but I’m just so excited!) Check out 99VintageGlam’s planning bio for tips and also an article from Something Old, Something New.

save the darn date!

I received an email from one of our guests about our save-the-date! I can’t wait any longer, I really want to share these with you! Where should I start? I designed everything in Adobe Illustrator. I made about three different mock-ups. I knew I wanted a calendar and an image that I could use again in subsequent projects. I’m all about cohesiveness. Since we’re getting married underneath an oak tree, the decision was simple! Here are the print-outs I used for the main save-the-date. I used the ink blocker to make the calendar green, but everything else was in brown.

Here’s the second print-out. The hotel information went on the back of the card, and the names were inked in green. The circle for the date proved difficult to line up perfectly on the Gocco, so I ended up nixing that idea and used a gold metallic pen to circle the date.

Now it’s Gocco time!!!

Here’s the main part of our Save-the-Date (please pardon the poor lighting):

Next, I made stickers for calendars. I got this idea from Martha Stewart Weddings! I bought labels from Office Depot and used the Avery Template on Word to enter the text. I also used one of our monograms bought from Creative Montage for the center sticker!

Then, it was Gocco time again! I made a card to affix the stickers to. I used double-sided tape to attach the stickers. The “Save-the-Date” text was done in Gold gocco ink (which is amazing) and the “We’re getting married, so label your calendars!” was done in Brown.

Finally came the magnets. I originally had the magnets printed by VistaPrint, but after a week on our fridge, the edges started to curl, so I had to make them by hand. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone, unless you’re like me and looking to save a buck. It’s a lot of work, A LOT! I had the photos printed at Kinko’s (for free, the woman took pity on me) and I bought magnet paper from Michael’s. [I'll do a price breakdown later!] Here is the file I gave to Kinkos and Matthew working hard on the magnets:

Then came the envelopes. These are my pride and joy, not because I made them but because they are SO PRETTY. They are this deep brown with shiny gold flecks. I can’t describe them properly. I bought them from Paper and More. For the address labels, I got this idea from Martha Stewart. They were printed out on the same card stock used to make the STD and then ran through a Xyron (bought on sale for $11.99 from Michael’s).

Here’s the final product all ready to go. Notice the curled paper clip? Yes, Matthew spent some quality time with the needle nose pliers! :)

Oh, and here’s my Rachel Ray trash bowl. It came in handy, and I would greatly recommend it for all projects! It keeps your area clean and you’re not constantly running to the trash can!

black is classic.

Thank you for all the comments on my groomsmen attire post.  What would I do without you guys?!?  I still haven’t made a “firm” decision, but I’m really leaning towards black.  I saw a picture today on The Bride’s Cafe of Jennie & Bret’s wedding.  Notice the bridesmaid dress color?  Oh, yes that’s brown.  Notice the groom?  Oh, yes that’s black and it looks SO classic, doesn’t it?  Thanks again!

cardbox…another DIY? (I think so!)

I saw these card boxes on Estilo Weddings thanks to Something Old Something New and they are just lovely!  However, I’m a poor law student and spending $55 on a box for cards is out of my budget.  So…DIY!!!!  This box is quite plain and adding a silk flower and beautiful ribbon would (seem) super easy.

After my save-the-date extravaganza (I’ll post them tomorrow, I promise!) I’m so inspired to keep going!  Hopefully this project stays on my list!

iWeb is the coolest.

I knew that I wanted a wedding website. Not because it’s a necessary item, but just out of sheer principle. I live the majority of my life on the internet (I can’t believe I just said that). It’s true though. Every time I need something, the first place I check is the web. So, it just seemed natural that we would have a website for our wedding. The tougher part came when we actually sat down to design our site. Initially, I thought I would use Adobe Dreamweaver. It’s what I have used to create my Knot Bio, and it’s pretty user friendly. My life changed the day I read Miss Cupcake’s “Creating a Wedding Website with iWeb.” If you have an Apple and you think to yourself, “I can’t create a website by myself, what are these girls thinking?” Please, take a breath, read her article and then give it a go. I promise you will not be disappointed.

iWeb is one of the most user-friendly programs in the world. I’m totally serious. Don’t even think about how you want your website to look, just start playing around. I looked at a bunch of different websites before I made a decision about mine. I started out the same way Miss Cupcake described in the article. iWeb has predesigned templates that you can use to get you started. The first one is the “White” template. I picked that and just started playing around with the colors (through inspector).

Here is our “Welcome” screen. When you pick the template, it will say “Welcome” on the page, and you’ll need to make Inspector your best friend because everything can be changed through this menu. The “Welcome” text looks like it can’t be removed simply by selecting and deleting, but if you go through the Inspector, to the Page tab, you can uncheck display navigation menu to remove the text. From there, just customize to your heart’s desire!

When I first published the site, the font I used (located under Fun Fonts, called Typewriter) is a font specific to Apple, and thus it didn’t show up on a PC. [A side note, I used iWeb to make the site, but we didn't publish to a .Mac account, instead we bought a domain from 1&1 Internet. There are certain features you won't be able to use if you don't publish to a .Mac account, including password protection and the blog/guestbook feature, however Matthew is a computer programmer and was able to create a guest book in PHP.] To get around that, instead of using text boxes, insert a shape and then type inside the shape. When you publish the site, it will make the shape into a picture, thus keeping the font intact. An example of this is shown below:

Here is our “Directions” page. I decided to add a few more hours of work and created a map using Adobe Illustrator. It was quite easy, I just pasted a Google map and traced it accordingly. I also inserted a link to a Google map for good measure.

One of my favorites part of our site is the “Gallery.” iWeb makes this part super easy. You’ll need to add a page from the “White” template called My Albums. Make sure all your photos are in the iPhoto library and then it’s just drag and drop. We put our engagement pictures, pictures from the proposal and then pictures of our family and friends. 90% of our guests have been recognized in our gallery and we’re quite proud of that. For us, it was important to make our family and friends feel very much apart of our wedding.

Our Guestbook is Matthew’s pride and joy. I can only tell you that he wrote it in PHP, and if you’re really interested (and have a computer background), just post a comment and I’ll have Matthew contact you. Our guests have been really responsive to our Guestbook, so I’m really glad we took the extra time to create it.

Hope this helps. Happy website designing!!!

black v. khaki v. brown?

One of my bridesmaids sent an email a couple days ago asking what the guys would be wearing. I’ve probably changed my mind on this issue about as many times as I’ve changed the flowers! It’s quite crazy. The girls are wearing chocolate J.Crew dresses (there were $39.99 and I just couldn’t pass that up). So now, what should the guys wear? Here are my thoughts:

1) Black is classic. The black contrasts really well in photographs with the white/ivory dress, and there will probably be more pictures of the bride and groom versus the bridesmaids and groomsmen. As an added bonus, some of the guys already have black suits so we’ll be saving them money (Fortunately, I don’t have the itch to make everyone wear the exact shade of black, but I do have other itches!)

(bkbistro’s bio – They are wearing our bridesmaid dresses!)

2) Khaki will obviously “blend” a bit better with the chocolate dresses. However, khaki is more of a casual look, more fitting on the beach. Yet, I really love the look a darker khaki/taupe suit. It would go really nicely with the dresses, but again there’s a cost factor because all the guys would need to buy a suit. They might not like me very much.

3) Brown suits will obviously match the bridesmaid dresses, and it looks more formal than khaki. Yet, we still run into the cost problem, because the guys don’t have brown suits.

What do you think?

a teaser, but more to come.

I’ve been a busy little bride-to-be this weekend.  First, I spent yesterday and today working on our save-the-dates and I can’t wait to share my work with you!  I went a little overboard (hint:  I should call it our save-the-date suite).  It was a huge amount of work, but I love them and I hope our guests get excited when they receive them!  They are going out in the mail on Monday, so hopefully I can post all about them by Thursday!  On Wednesday, we finished the website and we’ve gotten great feedback from family and friends.  I’ll post all about the website and some iWeb tips later in the week after all of our guests see it.  For now, here’s a little teaser…

Have a great weekend!

website, save-the-dates

I am back from Puerto Rico and I’m still trying to get settled.  Let’s just say my trip involved good and bad things – beautiful beaches, fun kayaking tours, losing my wallet on the flight, ending up in the hospital due to allergic reaction, and severe sun burn.  I’ve never been happier to be home from vacation!

Okay, so I know I’ve been slacking on the posting, but I have very good reason.  Matthew and I have been working diligently on our website, and I’m so happy to say that it will be up tonight!  I will prepare a very informative post of how we made it and some helpful tips for iWeb and publishing to a non-Mac account!

I spent a good amount of time on Illustrator last night working on our Save-the-Date!   On a side note, I had ordered magnets from VistaPrint before I left for break, but when I got back the magnets were no longer sticking to my refrigerator.  VistaPrint has great customer service though, because they refunded the entire amount including processing and shipping costs.  But, now I have to figure out another magnet option so that’s my next task.  This weekend we’ll be in full save-the-date assembly (GOCCO TIME!), so I promise there are exciting posts to come!

spring break!

I’m off to Puerto Rico for spring break, so I’ll be without my trusty laptop, and instead I’ll be laying on a beach with a pina colada!  I owe my last spring break trip to the coolest girl at the law school, Maricruz.  I had zero resources and zero time to go anywhere because of the wedding and impending graduation, etc.  Maricruz graciously gifted me her miles and threatened my life if I didn’t go…needless to say, no arm pulling was really necessary.  :)   Thank you, MC.  I love you.

thank you, sarah!

Why do I stalk photography blogs you ask? Because sometimes, in addition to sharing their amazing photos, they give other wedding advice. That happened today, at approximately 3 p.m. I remember the exact time because it was the moment I found my wedding shoe. And it’s fitting that it came from none other than Sarah K. Chen (i.e., mrs.pootiekins, i.e. my favorite bio ever)! I present to you my wedding shoe:

Luichiny Primal in Taupe

In the words of the new Project Runway winner – “fierce.”

The first thing that popped into my head…

When I saw these, it took about 10 minutes to complete the sale. I found them on Shoebuy.com and they were $68.95 (a tad cheaper than Christian Louboutins). Like, whoa. I found an online coupon for an additional 20% (cuz I’m greedy that way), and Shoebuy offers free shipping. So the grand total was $50. Sweeeeet. They offer some other great options and at GREAT prices:

So…what are you waiting for?? GO, go!!!
